The 15q11.2 BP1 region in human and mouse has been defined in terms of a common distal boundary mapping position and size of the inversion polymorphism disrupting the signal gene. We describe the refinement of this position and size for this locus in chimpanzee and gorilla. Comparisons among the five loci show that the chimpanzee and gorilla sequences are more similar to that of human than to each other. The inversion breakpoints in these species are located in the same region as in human and mouse, but a significant difference in the size of the inversion is evident among the three species. The sequences at the chimpanzee and gorilla loci can be compared to each other with a high degree of confidence, indicating that evolution of these species has occurred through mechanisms similar to those that have occurred within the family Hominidae. ac619d1d87
